Kearney Among 16 Nebraska Communities Considered for Advanced Nuclear Reactor Site

Kearney is one of 16 communities across Nebraska being evaluated as a potential location for a new, state-of-the-art nuclear power reactor.

To help residents learn more, a “Coffee & Conversation” event will be held on Wednesday, August 27, from 4:30 to 6:30 PM at the Kearney Public Library. This informal gathering will offer insights into what this opportunity could mean for Kearney, from economic development and job creation to enhanced energy security, and how next-generation nuclear technology could shape Nebraskas energy future.

In 2022, the Nebraska Legislature allocated $1 million to the Department of Economic Development (DED) to fund a feasibility study exploring potential sites for advanced nuclear reactors. This funding came from the federal American Rescue Plan Act.

The DED launched the Nuclear Plant Siting Feasibility Study Program to manage the initiative. The first phase of the study focused on analyzing existing data to identify areas with the geographic and infrastructure characteristics suitable for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), a new class of nuclear technology known for its flexibility, efficiency, and enhanced safety.

Sixteen locations were identified in Phase 1, including sites near: Beatrice, Brownville, Fremont, Grand Island, Hallam, Hastings, Holdrege, Kearney, Lexington, Nebraska City, Norfolk, Plattsmouth, Rushville, Sutherland, Valentine, and Wauneta.

Phase 2 of the study will involve a more detailed technical assessment, including environmental and constructability evaluations based on Nuclear Regulatory Commission criteria. This phase will narrow the list to approximately four finalist sites.

Community support will be a key factor in determining which locations advance. Kearney residents are encouraged to attend the upcoming event to learn more and share their perspectives.
